Unit 5.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Goalbook is a Common Core Standards based tool that can be used in order to meet the needs of all students by differentiation. This tool is very useful for Special Education teachers. It is a very extensive database with specific goals and interventions based off of the Universal Design for Learning. Goalbook could be used for students to help reach their goals from writing to math. All goals are on the site for teachers. Teachers just need to edit the learning targets for their students. Goalbook is very easy to navigate, with filters for each grade, subject level, and standard. Goalbook allows teachers to go in and edit goals once they are reached to help students succeed even further with their learning. One great thing with Goalbook is that the interventions that match up with each goal are thoroughly explained. There is also an area where teachers could find different ways to teach a skill to reach all learning styles.

Goalbook is free to try, but if teachers or districts would like to continue using the resource, there is a cost. For a solo teacher, a membership for Goalbook would be $49.95 per month. For a school or entire district, costs would start at $995 per year. Goal book does not have ads. All of the information on the site is valuable information pertaining to setting goals for students and including differentiation. There are a lot of reviews from other teachers on the site, but there is no collaboration among other teachers. Students cannot access this site directly. This tool is for teachers to track the progress of each of their students. If teachers would like to, they could share the information with each of their students. This tool is a great tool to use in schools. This tool would make tracking of goals for IEPs a lot easier for Special Education Teachers. By using this tool, teacher could make sure students are making progress towards their IEP goals.

Educational Uses of Site

As mentioned before, Goalbook is a great tool to track student goals. Goalbook could be used to differentiate instruction with all of the research-based strategies and resources available. Showing students the progress they are making towards their goals could be a major inspiration to want to work harder to reach each of their goals.

Review of Site

I think Goalbook would be an amazing tool to have in my classroom. I think the main reason I like Goalbook, is that it can be used for ALL students. A lot of teachers feel as though students with IEPs are the only students who have written goals to reach and should be monitored. This is not the case. Every teacher can have goals for their students. Yes, it will be a lot of work, but by setting goals for each student, teachers could track the progress each student in making on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. With the Goalbook app, tracking goals become a lot easier! Another reason why I like this tool is for the various research based strategies and interventions that are available with detailed explanations. In my school right now, we are trying to transform our RTII program in to something more meaningful for the district as a whole. Using Goalbook could make this transformation a lot easier.
